“How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her. - GENESIS 39:9-10
Staying focused on why you have chosen holiness is critical to remaining holy. What blesses me the most about Joseph’s response to Potiphar’s wife is that his focus wasn’t on what would happen if he sinned, on what the consequences would be. No, his response was totally focused on the heart of God. In spite of all that he had gone through, Joseph cared how God would feel about his actions! He was clear on the fact that even if no one was “hurt,” God would be grieved by the sin. I believe that fear of an outcome will never be enough to keep us in line with God. Jesus clearly stated, “If you love me, you will obey what I command” (John 14:15). That should be motivation enough.
When temptation beckons, what is our first thought usually? The fear of being caught, unfortunately. But, if we truly love Him—and as our love grows—the heart of God becomes our primary concern.
Just because you love God doesn’t mean you won’t be tempted. In fact, it’s safe to say you will be tempted. I believe Joseph was tempted. He was also honest with himself about his weaknesses and set boundaries to safeguard his commitment to God. He avoided his master’s wife as much as possible. In the fight to stay holy, we must know ourselves, acknowledge our inclinations, and set boundaries to ensure our obedience to God.
What is your response to temptation? What boundaries can you set to protect yourself?
PRAY THIS PRAYER WITH ME:
“Dear heavenly Father, keep me safe when I can’t do it. My first desire is to please You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
