An Open Book - Kerry Shook

August 08, 2016
Open books lead to open minds. Someone who is an open book is considered transparent; they don’t hide things, and it’s easy to know what they’re thinking and feeling.  The same can be said for Jesus and the Bible.
Then Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine. For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light. Mark 4:21-22 (NLT)
“We believe, and we know You are the Holy One of God.” John 6:69
Today’s leaders need to be reminded that those they lead not only expect, but also deserve, to have leaders who truly value and demonstrate transparency and trust. While good intentions and inspiring words are a start, only a leader’s actions can truly move an organization and change the culture. Even Robert Gates, former United States Secretary of Defense (one of the most secret organizations in the world) understands the value of transparency!  Gates says, “Transparency builds confidence, empowers people with information, and helps organizations run more smoothly. Transparency has some costs, but overall, the benefits of being open far outweigh the downsides for the reformer.”
Biblical transparency begins with a revelation that Jesus is the Son of the Living God, affirming what He has done for you and that He is your personal Lord and Savior!  When preparing the disciples for His crucifixion and resurrection, He revealed all that was in front of Him, including the suffering.  He never tried to hide or minimize what was to occur. He told them the truth.
Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later He would rise from the dead. Mark 8:31 (NLT)
As a leader and as an individual, turn the page and be an open book. There is nothing like transparency and the truth. Who knows? Telling others the truth about yourself and your organization might just set them free!
