But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I, that I should go….’” Exodus 3:11 (NIV)
Have you ever asked God the same question? Who am I that I should go or do whatever it is that God is calling you for? If you have, then you’re in good company. Moses was now 80 years old. He was a fugitive from Egypt who was living in the back side of the desert, taking care of sheep for the past 40 years. Sure, there was a time when he was younger that he had ambitions of delivering Israel. In fact, the Egyptian he killed was beating a Hebrew, “… one of his own people.” Exodus 2:11 (NIV)
Moses also knew his miraculous heritage. For all practical purposes, he should have been killed with the other Hebrew baby boys his age. But, God chose him. Moses’ very name means “to draw out”. However, hopes had long since dashed that his destiny would ever be fulfilled. When God called Moses from a burning bush, He told him to return to Egypt and lead Israel to a promised land; is it any wonder Moses asked,
“Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
The Good News Bible says,
“But Moses said to God, ‘I am nobody….”
Is that how you feel? Moses’ assignment was “God-sized.” How would he do it? He felt inadequate and unqualified for the task. Who am I? I am nobody. If you’ve felt that way, remember this: God uses nobodies. All that a nobody needs is somebody like God with him. When Moses asked, “Who am I?”, God responded by saying,
“I am who I am.” (V. 14)
God was saying it doesn’t matter who you think you are – or are not – for that matter. What matters is who I am!
What qualified Moses for the job? God appeared to him and called him. Someone said, “God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called.” What has He called you to do? Is it God-sized? Do you feel like Moses? Quit looking at who you are in comparison to the task, and realize who God is. Remember that it’s not the amount of your faith, but rather the object of your faith, that matters.
