It’s been 20 years since we witnessed Kerri Strug and the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team win Olympic gold in Atlanta. Kerri’s performance became one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history. This year in 2016, we take a look back at that iconic vault to get us inspired and ready for this year’s Olympic in Rio de Janeiro kicking off tonight.
It was the vault watched around the world. The U.S. women’s team was poised to win gold for the first time ever in team competition and all they needed was to land two successful vaults. All eyes were on Kerri Strug, the team’s final vaulter. After her first vault, she fell and heard two cracks in her left ankle. She walked off the stage in pain. With encouraging words from her coach and determination, she gave the performance of her life, nailed her second vault and went down in Olympic history. Strug’s successful vault clinched gold for the “Magnificent 7” women’s team.
Kerri’s story is one of inspiration and determination in the face of defeat. Whenever you need inspiration and encouragement when you’re feeling defeated, this video is sure to lead you in the right direction.
