WARNING SYSTEM - Dag Heward-Mills

READ: 1 Timothy 1:18-20

For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.

1 Timothy 1:19-20, NLT

If you have a seared or hardened conscience, you will not confess your sins often. If you have a hardened conscience, you will see yourself as righteous. Repeated sin also leads to a hardened conscience:

“Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily , therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil” (Ecclesiastes 8:11).

“Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme” (1 Timothy 1:19-20).

As you can see from the Scripture above, Hymenaeus and Alexander put aside a good conscience and made shipwreck of their faith. Setting aside a sensitive warning system is a dangerous thing to do. You must be careful to maintain a good conscience all your life:

It is better to be over-apologetic than to be over-righteous. “Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?” (Ecclesiastes 7:16).
