Mr. Ellis' Serenade: The Strength of Simple Kindnesses - Bishop T.D Jakes

Don't underestimate the healing power of kindness.

There are few things more frightening than a diagnosis of cancer. In a moment, the illness changes the direction of the patient’s life. Feelings of loneliness, hopelessness, and fear are common.

It is in times like these that kindness is the best remedy for downcast hearts.

A gesture of kindness is exactly what teacher Ben Ellis received from his students. Mr. Ellis was diagnosed last year with an aggressive form of cancer that eventually left him unable to go on teaching. Though away from his school and his students, the young people he educated did not forget about him.

Earlier this month, over 400 of his former students gathered outside his home and proceeded to serenade Mr. Ellis with hymns as a way to lift his spirits and remind him that though the future is uncertain, the support he has from those he has taught is definite and immense.

Videos of the serenade have since gone viral, earning over a combined 500k views since the gathering at Mr. Ellis’ home on September 12, 2016.

Touching moments like this show the strength that can be found in simple kindnesses.

Reaching out to another person in the time of their lowest moments takes such a small amount of effort but the results are immeasurable. A sincere gesture can bring relief; a compassionate word can ease suffering.

Studies have shown that acts of kindness not only benefit others, but also the person who spreads the goodwill. Among other benefits, it makes us happier, improves our heart health, and can even slow aging. Putting positivity into the world only creates more positivity for us all.

Kindness is the sort of strength that should be used any chance we get.
