Foundational Thinking - Kerry Shook
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think…” Romans 12:2a (NLT)
It sounds so simple. Change the way you think…become a better person. Oh, if it were only as easy as it sounds! Paul was trying to teach us that our thinking really does dictate who we are. In order to transform the way we think, we need to first examine our foundational thinking.
Foundational thinking comes from many different places. Some of our foundational thoughts come from our parents, some maybe from friends, and even some from overall life experiences. As a matter of fact, much of our personal makeup is rooted in these foundational thoughts. What are some of these thoughts? Let’s look at just a few.
One foundational thought may be the way we look at circumstances in life. Do we look at things optimistically or pessimistically? In other words, do we see the cup half full or half empty? Another thought may be how we view other people. Do we classify or rate people according to race or income level, or do we see people for who they are inside? What about the way we spend money? Do we live within our means or do we live on credit? In order for us to examine these thoughts, we need to look at our lives and stop comparing them to one another; instead, we need to start comparing them to Christ! Let’s look at who we are in Christ, and re-examine foundational thoughts that may be limiting God’s best in our lives!
