Humble and Kind - Kerry Shook

In Tim McGraw’s song, Humble and Kind, he sings, “I know you got mountains to climb, but always stay humble and kind.”  In many ways, it’s the same timeless treasure that Micah shared with us in the Bible over 2,600 years ago!

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?  Micah 6:8 (ESV)

Humility and kindness are not the leadership traits that someone initially expects of a leader, yet it was right at the heart of Jesus’ leadership. These traits were the pillars of His servant leadership style, and He had a unique gentleness to His approach.  Whether leading a team at work, volunteers, or our own families, being a leader is challenging; but, humble leaders understand the balance between being gentle and remaining strong.

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, He gave up his divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When He appeared in human form, He humbled Himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated Him to the place of highest honor and gave Him the Name above all other names.  Philippians 2:5-9 (NLT)

In a recent interview, Tim McGraw said, “Doing the right thing takes practice, simple things lead to big things. Kindness, like songwriting, is a craft that you work on every day to get better at.”  I believe Micah would most definitely agree, don’t you?

Lord, help me to lead like Jesus with humility and kindness. Please give me the strength each day to serve, trust, forgive, and invest in the people that I lead.
