“And [the LORD God] said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” - GENESIS 3:11
The most elusive thing in life is “enough.” God, speaking through Haggai, the prophet, said to the people, Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it (Haggai 1:6).
Though he was referring to the fact God’s people had neglected the house of the Lord to pursue pleasure, the same can be said of us. When we make us the priority instead of obeying God, our lack is magnified.
Adam and Eve had no problem being naked until they chose to pursue pleasure they thought God was robbing them of. This is the sticky wicket. The enemy of our souls tries to convince us we lack something, that God is holding out on us. And if we choose to believe this hateful seed, our nakedness becomes magnified. Suddenly our dreams seem out of reach.
Our natural inclination is to grow suspicious and discontent. “Why is God taking so long to give us this?” we ask. Our misery grows until we’re confronted by the Spirit of God, who challenges us to give careful thought to our ways. “What fruit have you eaten to absorb so much discontent? What has buried your faith and made you question My intentions?” Then we examine our demands and realize we’ve gone astray. Praise the Lord that we can confess our errant ways and the Lord will welcome us back!
Do you have enough? Why or why not?
PRAY THIS PRAYER WITH ME:
“Dear heavenly Father, please silence the voice of discontent within me and replace my fears and doubts with Your truth and faithful promises. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
